Simple, everyday tips from our master educators to keep your luxury extensions looking beautiful, strong, and completely healthy.
The First 48 Hours: Let Them Rest
The first two days after you get your extensions attached are the most important. During this time, the glue, tapes, or links are still setting. You must keep your hair completely dry! Do not wash your hair, go swimming, or do heavy exercises that make your head sweaty. Letting them cure without any water or steam helps them stay safely anchored for a very long time.
Brushing Your Hair the Right Way
You should brush your hair at least two times every day to stop tangles from forming. But remember, never pull or yank on your hair! At Tuana Hair Design, our educators recommend using a special extension brush. When you brush, hold your hair in a loose ponytail with one hand to protect your roots. Always start brushing gently at the ends of your hair first, and then slowly work your way up to the top.
Washing and Drying Rules
When it is time to wash your hair, always use the special shampoos and conditioners that your stylist suggests. Regular grocery store products can have harsh chemicals that make extensions slip out. Gently wash your scalp, but do not scrub the spots where the extensions connect. Only apply conditioner from the middle of your hair down to the ends. Putting conditioner on your roots can make the extension bonds loose and greasy.
After your shower, use a towel to gently squeeze the water out instead of rubbing it. You should never go to bed with wet hair! Wet roots can cause the extensions to matte and tangle while you sleep. Always use a blow dryer to dry the roots and the connection spots completely so they stay strong.
Protecting Your Hair at Night
Sleeping can cause friction, which rubs your hair and makes it frizzy. Before you hop into bed, tie your hair into a loose braid or a low, soft ponytail. This keeps the hair from twisting around while you move at night. We also highly recommend sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. Silk is very smooth, so your hair can glide across it easily without snagging or breaking.
Stick to Your Appointment Schedule
Extensions are not a "set it and forget it" service. As your real hair grows, the extension pieces will naturally move further down away from your scalp. If you wait too long to get them adjusted, they can become heavy and twist your real hair strands
